The first step into a year of formation
Accademia XXI offers a ten-month residential year of formation in Liguria. Admission is by careful curation rather than open application. Each applicant is reviewed individually, and the cohort is composed personally by the founder for the qualities each student brings to the group as a whole.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no fixed deadline. Candidates are encouraged to apply when they feel ready, with applications also accepted following the release of IB and A-level results in July and August.
Who Accademia XXI is for
Accademia XXI is designed for young adults between 17 and 25 at a transitional moment. The cohort typically includes students across four profiles:
Academically capable students seeking clarity
Students with strong academic potential who feel uncertain about the direction they wish to pursue before committing fully to university.
Students reconsidering academic pathways
Students who did not secure their first-choice university, who wish to strengthen their profile, or who are reconsidering an existing pathway.
Students with potential not yet fully reflected academically
Young people whose intellectual curiosity, cultural sensitivity or leadership potential is not yet fully reflected through traditional academic metrics.
Internationally minded students
Students who are curious about culture, ideas, dialogue, communal life and sustained intellectual engagement.
These are not rigid categories. Many students identify with more than one.
Who Accademia is NOT for
Accademia is not a conventional gap year built around travel, entertainment or constant stimulation. Other formats may suit students seeking:
complete independence, without structure or communal responsibility
purely transactional or CV-building experiences
party-oriented or tourism-focused programmes
a direct transition from school to university without a pause
university application preparation as the primary outcome

Willing to engage with outdoor physical activity, unstructured time, structured discipline and the demands of a year that asks more rather than less.

Admissions criteria
A. Core requirements
Educational background
Completion of secondary education or equivalent.
Language proficiency
The programme is conducted entirely in English. Candidates do not need to be native speakers, but they do need to be able to engage with ideas, ask questions and contribute to dialogue in English with reasonable confidence and clarity. Non-native speakers are welcome to include any evidence of their language level — formal or informal — as part of their application.
Disposition for reflection and intellectual engagement
Evidence of curiosity, critical thinking, and a willingness to engage with complex ideas and cultural forms.
Cultural and artistic interest
Demonstrated interest in cultural appreciation, creative practice or critical thought
B. Supplementary materials
Motivation statement
Applicants are invited to reflect on their reasons for applying, their understanding of excellence, and the direction they seek to develop.
Intellectual curiosity statement
Candidates are invited to reflect on a subject, question, or idea they find themselves returning to repeatedly, even beyond the context of school.
Recommendation letters
At least one letter from a mentor, teacher, or professional familiar with the candidate’s abilities and character.
Interview
A personal conversation to assess alignment with Accademia XXI values, interpersonal qualities and intellectual engagement.
C. Individual circumstances:
Accademia XXI evaluates students individually rather than through rigid academic profiling. Admissions decisions are always considered carefully on a case-by-case basis to ensure the environment is appropriate both for the individual student and the cohort as a whole.
Admissions process
The admissions process at Accademia XXI is designed to be personal, transparent and unhurried. Each step serves a specific purpose: to allow the Academy to understand the candidate, and to allow the candidate to understand the Academy — before any commitment is made on either side.
Initial contact and introductory call
The process begins with the submission of the online contact form available on the Academy’s website. This first step initiates a conversation rather than a formal application. Upon receiving the form, the admissions team will schedule a video call with the candidate — and, where appropriate, with their family — to present the programme in detail, explain the admissions process, answer initial questions, and assess whether Accademia XXI is the right fit for this particular moment in the candidate’s formation.
This introductory call is not an evaluation. It is an invitation to dialogue.
Formal application submission
Candidates who wish to proceed following the introductory call submit their formal application by email. The application includes the completed application form together with the supporting documentation required for the admissions review.
Document upload
Candidates are asked to upload the following documents:
- Academic transcripts from current and previous institutions
- A copy of a valid passport or national identity document
- A written motivation statement responding to the essay prompt provided
- A project statement presenting an initiative or undertaking the candidate has developed independently
- One or more letters of recommendation from a teacher, mentor or professional familiar with the candidate’s character and abilities
Preliminary screening
The admissions team conducts an initial evaluation of the complete application. This review assesses intellectual curiosity and engagement, alignment with the Academy’s educational philosophy and values, clarity and seriousness of the motivation statement, and the overall coherence and completeness of the application. Candidates who meet the threshold for progression are invited to proceed to the personal interview.
Personal interview
The personal interview is conducted by the founder of Accademia XXI and the admissions officer. It is a substantive conversation — typically lasting between forty-five minutes and one hour — designed to assess the candidate’s motivation, intellectual engagement, communication, and personal readiness for the demands of the program.
A family member is also invited to join a dedicated portion of the interview. This is not a formality. Accademia XXI considers the family an important interlocutor in the admissions process — ensuring that parents or guardians have a full and direct understanding of the program, its expectations, and the nature of the experience their son or daughter is choosing.
Final evaluation and decision
Following the personal interview, the admissions committee conducts a holistic review of the complete application — integrating the documentary evidence, the preliminary screening assessment, and the impressions and observations from the personal interview. Candidates are informed of the committee’s decision within a defined timeframe. Successful candidates receive a formal offer of admission together with enrollment documentation.
Enrollment and orientation
Admitted students complete the enrollment process and are introduced to the Accademia XXI community before the programme formally begins. The orientation phase includes introductory sessions with faculty and staff, preparatory reading and academic materials, practical information about residential life and daily routines, and initial etiquette and community sessions designed to establish the tone and expectations of the year ahead.
The enrollment process is also an opportunity for the Academy to begin the process of mentor assignment — so that each student arrives on the first day of the programme already in relationship with the individuals who will guide them through the year.

Section 1: personal information
Name, date of birth, nationality, and contact details.
Section 2: educational background
Schools previously attended, subjects studied, academic achievements.
Section 3: motivation statement
Essay prompt: Describe a moment, work of art, conversation, place, or experience that changed the way you see the world. Why did it stay with you? What questions did it leave you with?
Word limit: 500-700 words.
Section 4: intellectual curiosity statement
What is a subject, question, or idea you find yourself returning to repeatedly, even outside school?
Section 5: recommendation letter(s)
Contact details for at least one referee.
Section 6: physical well-being and interests
This section collects information that helps the Academy support each student’s daily life. Applicants are invited to share details on:
- Current or past involvement in sports and physical activities
- General approach to physical well-being and routine
- Any medical conditions or relevant health considerations
- Allergies (food or environmental)
- Dietary requirements or restrictions (e.g. vegetarian, vegan, religious considerations)
- Any other personal needs that the Academy should be aware of to support daily life and participation in the programme
Section 7: agreement and declaration
Consent for data processing and confirmation of the accuracy of provided information.
After admission: how the year begins
Once admitted, students enter a structured pre-arrival period that introduces them to the cohort, the philosophy of the programme and the practical preparations for residential life.
This pre-arrival phase is itself part of the formation. It marks the beginning of a year that asks for serious engagement from the moment of admission, not just from the first day on site.
This includes:
Mentor pairing
Initial discussion with the academic mentors who will accompany the student throughout the year
Pre-programme reading and dialogue
Introductory materials, online discussions and structured preparation for the curriculum
Etiquette and protocol introduction
Preparatory sessions on the practical conventions of residential life
Cultural and physical orientation
Guidance on settling into Liguria, including practical information on language, daily life and the sports programme
Life at Accademia XXI: practical information
Residential structure
The Academy is supervised by a dedicated Headmistress and maintains 24/7 adult supervision throughout the year. Students are accommodated in separate male and female rooms, sharing with one fellow student. Single rooms are available on request.
Food and wellbeing
Full board is included. Meals are freshly cooked on site daily using Mediterranean cuisine and locally sourced ingredients where possible. Halal-friendly options are available, and dietary and allergic requirements are attended to carefully. Afternoon tea is part of the daily rhythm.
Digital environment
Accademia XXI operates with a structured digital policy. Phones are not used during educational activities and are stored during designated periods to encourage presence, conversation and attention. Students have designated times each day for family communication

Genova is directly connected to a wide range of European cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Kraków, London, Madrid, Manchester, Munich, Paris, Rome, Tirana and Warsaw.
Airport transfers from Genova are organised by Accademia XXI and are included in the programme fee.
